A Running Coach Gives You His 6 Best Training Tips

Runners come in all shapes and sizes — small, large, big, light, speedy, heavy, lean, muscular and much more. Which means that there’s usually no uniform way to becoming a better, more efficient runner. 

With myriad training plans, fitness tips and mountains of beneficial exercises to wade through, it’s difficult to cut through the noise.

With this in mind, we tapped-up Ed Norman, extreme sports mentor and The North Face trainer, to give you five of his best training tips. Whether you’re a parkrun regular or training for endurance events (even both), there’s something for you below. 

1. Understand what your feet are doing

To iron-clad your feet, there’s little better than trail running. Straying from the path towards muddier climes will pay dividends when it comes to race day. “Running on trail usually consists of uneven terrain, thus placing more tri-planar stress on the foot tissue,” explains Norman. Stronger feet = happier, safer feet.

2. Change up your route

A study from the journal PLOS One suggests that getting out of the gym and using steady-state cardio outdoors made study participants considerably happier.  “The beauty of trail running is its variation,” says Norman. “Pick and choose routes that are different. Single tracks, forest bridleways, steep hills, open fields, coastal paths, the options are endless.”

University of Innsbruck researchers also found more positive moods resulted from an outdoor hike than a dull treadmill workout, so give Mother Nature the green light. “By changing up the terrain, your mind and body will continue to be inspired and your motivation for running will be forever simmering.”

3. Prep, prep, prep

Of all the exhausting fitness clichés, ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’ rings true for thousands of would-be athletes. Sometimes, it just comes down to having the right kit. “If you’re heading on a trail [run], be sure to have some essential kit with you for safety.”

Essentials: a windproof if you think the weather could draw in, a first aid kit if you’re tackling a tough route or a scramble, enough fluids if you’re out for a good length of time and a phone if you become stuck. “Being safe and smart will only enhance your trail experience. An ultra-running pack is lightweight and can carry all the essentials,” says Norman.  

4. Don’t neglect the hilly stuff

As vomit-enducing as they are, hills and inclines harness the power to transform your run from a questionable plod to something much more rewarding. “Being a stronger, more rounded hill runner will have huge crossover benefits. It won’t just ramp up your VO2 max and lung capacity, but will also make you faster, more durable and less injury prone.” Naturally, this will benefit you significantly in the long run. “Sessions such as hill repeats or rolling hills in your run where there is a mixture of steep ups and downs is ideal for testing the skeletal and muscular system.” Your PB will thank you for it. 

5. Enter a race

Naturally, Norman is a big fan of trail running events. “It’s a unique experience and you’ll save highs and lows with other likeminded people,” he says. “Trail races bond people together and once you start you will be fixed.”

6. Upgrade your wheels
