Cambridge Consultants has unveiled Leap, a new single-use, high-definition miniature endoscope camera which enables imaging during intravascular surgery.
Leap features the latest Omnivision camera which provides a digital view inside veins and arteries.
The miniature camera has a 400 x 400 pixel image standard capability and ‘chip-on-tip’ design, where the imaging sensor is located at the distal end of the endoscope.

Cambridge Consultants expects that the Leap camera can be combined with its ‘super-resolution’ image processing to enhance the resolution to 1600 x 1600 pixels.

Cambridge Consultants Surgical and Interventional Products head Simon Karge said: “We have combined our intravascular device experience with our knowledge of micro‑optics, systems engineering and AI, in conjunction with external manufacturing partners.
“The result is an economically viable, disposable camera system that is small enough to fit into the working channel of a typical vascular catheter. For the first time, Leap offers practical, direct visualisation in the procedure room and a platform for integration of new configurations, sensor types and imaging modalities.”
The 1.35mm diameter of Leap camera allows flexibility in various angioscopy procedures, such as intracoronary angioscopy. It also enables tissue classification and the direct imaging of non-standard vascular occlusions.
Leap can be used in combination with existing technologies, including Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), for improved diagnostic approaches during surgery.
To address the risk of infection associated with existing endoscopes due to inadequate sterilisation, Leap is designed for single-use and eliminates the need for sterilisation and maintenance.
