Professor Mayur Lakani is the president of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Professor Lakani has been a practising GP in Leicestershire for 26 years in the same practice in Sileby, near Loughborough. As CCG clinical lead, Prof Lakani pioneered a scheme for palliative care which is widely used in over a 100 practices. Mayur was elected as president in 2017. He was also appointed CBE in the 2007 Queen’s Birthday Honours list “for playing a fundamental role in raising the profile of general practice”. Professor Lakhani has been included in the Top 50 most influential people in the UK health service by Health Service Journal in 2006 and 2007.

Prof Lakani talks about the RCGP, how it is the largest medical college in the UK and how they are embarking on a major transformation working on the future of general practice and primary care. 1 million people will visit their GP practice every working day. 90% of the work of the NHS is done in primary care. We need to embrace prevention, holistic care and people taking charge of their health and well being.

He talks about how it is important to be the best doctor you can be and how it’s all about standards, development and learning. You need to be on the side of the patients. It is important that GPs shape the future and through leadership and then they can embrace the new frontiers of health and well being.
