Digital health startup AppliedVR plans to launch five virtual trials of its VR-based treatment for chronic pain. The company struck a one-year partnership with Curebase to run the studies, with plans to enroll more than 2,000 participants.
Los Angeles-based AppliedVR builds VR-based programs, including mindfulness exercises and pain education. More than 240 health systems have used its platform.
The company received breakthrough device designation from the Food and Drug Administration for treatment-resistant fibromyalgia and low back pain. Earlier this year, it wrapped up a pivotal study of its VR-based treatment that showed a 42% reduction in lower back pain intensity, according to results published in JMIR.
AppliedVR President and Co-founder Josh Sackman said in a news release that the partnership with Curebase would help reduce the burden on research staff.
The San Francisco-based company builds software tools specifically to support decentralized clinical trials. Earlier this year, it raised $15 million as it added more customers.
Curebase will manage patient recruitment, consent, engagement and collecting outcomes for all five trials. Its platform can also help with randomization, and sending participants VR headsets and trial kits.
