After co-founding the company just six years ago, the CEO of home healthcare provider Heal is stepping down. In a letter shared with MedCity News, Nick Desai shared he was looking to “catch my breath from Heal.”

He didn’t share what he had planned next, but indicated an interest in health equity.

“…I am thinking about who’s going to create the healthcare solution that is used not by 100,000 or one million, but rather 100 million Americans,” he wrote.

Heal, which is headquartered in Pasadena, started out as a venture between Desai and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Renee Dua, who is also Desai’s spouse. Humana led a $100 million investment in the company last year, for a total of $200 million raised to date.

The company currently does business in 11 states, offering at-home primary care visits and telehealth visits. Many of its patients are covered by Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans. To date, Heal said it has conducted 250,000 visits.

Scott Vertrees, the former CEO of EasyPay Finance, will become Heal’s new CEO. He previously served as an advisor to the company, helping develop a remote monitoring device used by the company that syncs with Heal’s records. Meanwhile, Dua will continue to serve as Heal’s CMO.
