Northwell Direct, a subsidiary of New Hyde Park, New York-based Northwell Health, is partnering with Whole Foods Market to provide its employees in the New York metro area with access to a customized primary care network.

Whole Foods team members will have access to seven Northwell Health primary care locations in Westchester and Long Island as well as in Manhattan and Queens in New York City.

As part of the employees’ existing healthcare benefits coverage, they and their eligible dependents will be able to see the Northwell providers without having to pay a deductible or co-pay.

“Not only will Whole Foods team members have access to high-quality care and a customized experience, but it will also reduce the financial burden on the member,” Nick Stefanizzi, CEO of Northwell Direct, said in an email.

Further, Northwell’s participating physician practices will integrate health coaching into the care they provide and focus on stress management, healthy eating, fitness, smoking cessation and other wellness services.

Care navigators at these practices will also help patients that need referrals to specialists.

“Northwell Direct shares the Whole Foods values of promoting team member growth and happiness and engaging in win-win partnerships through holistic thinking and the importance of diet and lifestyle in promoting health,” said Dr. Warren Brown, vice president of medical affairs for Whole Foods Market, in a news release. “We are glad to partner with them to help our team members and their families live their best and experience a full life as valued contributors to home, work and community.”

Northwell Direct was created to connect the health system’s clinical services and employers in the New York region. In the short term, the subsidiary will focus on helping employers navigate the new normal brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Northwell Direct recently entered into a partnership with virtual care company Conversa Health to offer employers a Covid-19 screening tool for their employees.

In addition, it partnered with JetBlue to provide the airline with a set of Covid-19 services and programs to support its employees.

“However, we are also focused on a long-term strategy of partnering with employers to drive quality, experience and savings through our insurance product,” Stefanizzi said. “[We] believe we can be a value additive partner to self-funded employers.”

“We are confident that our health and well-being services will support the development of an engaging culture that ultimately will help drive business outcomes for our clients,” he added.
