As IT continues to evolve, healthcare CIOs have to refine their strategies before adopting new technologies. Not only do they have to consider the tech’s pros and cons, but they also have to manage a plethora of information and ensure security.

Jamie Thomas is the general manager of strategy and development for IBM Systems. Her organization assists with research and development of some of IBM’s infrastructural products for various industries, including healthcare.

In a phone interview, she offered a few thoughts on what CIOs should consider when it comes to data and new technologies.

“I would say that some of the most prominent advice we have for healthcare executives is around the whole topic of data management,” she said.

Data is expanding exponentially in the healthcare industry. Organizations should think holistically about their data management life cycle and their data retention strategies, Thomas said.

She also stressed the importance of data security. Healthcare entities should be sure to have a basic disaster recovery plan around data. While most organizations understand the basics of disaster recovery, many don’t think of it in the context of a security attack, she noted.

Looking ahead to 2019, Thomas voiced her thoughts on which technologies will prevail.

“Going into the new year, I do believe we will continue to see the utilization of machine learning technology to be particularly prevalent in the medical industry,” she said, adding that ML techniques can also be applied to visual data.

But blockchain is a different beast to be tamed. “The impact around blockchain in the healthcare industry is probably yet to be fully realized,” Thomas said. However, it could one day have a profound impact on the supply chain aspect of the field.
