One of the most time consuming and costly parts of drug development is recruiting participants, which can take up to a year. Clinical study sites may be many miles from the participant’s home and work and taking part in these trials can disrupt participants’ lives. Indeed, the location of the trial might be a dealbreaker in itself and greatly reduce the likelihood that these trials will include a diverse group of participants.
These factors, in addition to advances in remote monitoring technology, the 21st Century Cures Act, startups interest in addressing clinical trial pain points and the adoption of FHIR to advance data sharing for electronic health records, have led the biopharma industry to take a more innovative approach to clinical trial design.
