Well done for being here, mate. Not because you’ve finally plucked up the courage to pop the question, but because you’ve realised that you can’t just buy the 18ct gold equivalent of a child’s hula hoop and be done with it. No, a lot of thought and consideration needs to go into buying an engagement ring, the biggest technical aspect being how to find your partner’s ring size, because nothing will ruin your proposal more than a ring so tight it cuts off blood circulation or a ring so loose they lose it down a drain in the first 10 minutes.
But how exactly do you find out your other half’s ring size without ruining the surprise completely? Here are a just few ways to crack the age-old conundrum…
Raid Their Jewellery Box
If your partner has a hefty collection of jewellery you’ve seen them wear before, it’s an idea to go all cat burglar on them and pinch one for a couple of days (make sure it’s not one they wear daily). Simply take it to a jeweller and they’ll be able to measure the ring properly and give an indication of what size ring you’d need for their wedding finger.
Try It On For Size
If stealing your future fiancée’s belongings gives you anxiety sweats, then we’ve got another clever trick for you to try out. Place one of their rings on your own finger and mark with a pen where it comes down to. Show this to a professional jeweller to get a stealthily accurate estimate of their size.
Tip: always measure your rings in the evening where your body will be at an optimum temperature, as when you’re too cold your fingers will be smaller.
Alternatively, you can always print out this handy ring size guide. Simply place a ring over the circles, matching the inner diameter to find your appropriate ring size.
Tie The Knot
As in you literally tie a knot around their finger while they’re fast asleep and take it into the jewellers, who’ll be able to make an accurate measurement based on your stealthy skills. What if they wake up, you ask? Make some strange arm movements and say it’s all a dream. Crisis averted.
We received this unique tip from engagement ring experts Beaverbrooks, who have 70 stores nationwide and nearly 100 years of experience in dealing with finding the perfect ring. While you’re there finding out sizes, you might as well start to look at the type of ring you want, investigating diamond cuts, carats, clarities and colours. If you have no idea where to start, we’d suggest speaking to your partner’s mother, sisters and friends, as one of these will surely know what style they want.
Hint: rings with wider bands will fit a bit tighter, so you may need to go up a size.
All this sneaking around advice might seem a tad MI5 but trust us, it will be worth it in the end when you pick the ring of their dreams.
For our last tip, we’d suggest taking them on a shopping trip to “buy your mother a ring for her birthday”. Wink wink, nudge nudge. Once in a jewellery store get them to try on the potential present, because you want to see how it looks. Enquire on the ring size and how it fits and – BOOM – the job is done. Well done, Ethan Hunt.
