Have you ever heard the term “stay in your lane”? While it may be applicable in some workplaces, where people are expected to keep their focus narrow, these days it isn’t something you’ll hear much in pharmaceutical-related industries.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration has become vital to successful research and development activities within pharma and many other sectors. “Silo” is now practically a dirty word as companies look for ways to break down barriers between researchers working in different disciplines.

One of the key challenges is how to merge different fields, such as biology and chemistry, which rely on different terminology and data to solve problems. Isolated research solutions may provide individual answers, but questions that require combined efforts will require considerable effort or continue to go unanswered. A way to address that challenge is to provide scientists with access to relevant multidisciplinary information solutions that can normalize and share data seamlessly. In other words, the tools need to be compatible so the baton can be passed back and forth to complete multi-step tasks. That’s the only way to reliably obtain the benefits that modern research solutions tout.

Companies recognize the value that their researchers and scientists can deliver when they are properly supported, but ensuring that occurs is easier said than done. In the solution story Merging systems biology & chemistry to streamline the quest for natural, active ingredients, discover firsthand how a group of researchers from Oriflame’s Skin Research Institute, based in Sweden, used two different research tools to get the answers they were seeking.

While developing a product to combat skin wrinkling, they needed to identify skin ageing targets and find active natural ingredients to modulate them. The team used Elsevier’s Pathway Studio and Reaxys Medicinal Chemistry during different steps of their process. Because these tools are able to share data seamlessly, the team significantly accelerated their pace of discovery.

As a result, the team discovered several patentable, active natural ingredients in half the time it would have taken with more conventional methods. Read on to learn more about the team’s approach and workflow process, and how these tools helped them to save time, minimize risk and reduce costs.
