Tech giant Apple has broken into the digital health space and is now giving priority to include health and fitness tracking features in their latest gadgets.

Yesterday Apple released the Apple Watch Series 4 which includes new technology which could allow people with type 1 diabetes greater control.

One of the biggest features is its ability to synchronise with One Drop’s newest Bluetooth-enabled blood glucose meter, the One Drop Chrome. Before, users were required to manually enter their blood glucose readings to the app. But now data can be seamlessly synchronised, making tracking easier, quicker and optimising diabetes management.

The Watch also features a heart monitor which has received FDA approval to conduct an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure heart rhythm. It is known that people with diabetes are at greater risk of developing heart problems. This feature has also received clearance to detect if your heart rate is too slow and alert the user if they are at risk of atrial fibrillation.

Also of interest is a function which detects if the wearer has fallen over and hasn’t moved for a while. In this instance the Watch can signal to Siri to call for help. This may provide a sense of security for those at risk of hypoglycaemia which can sometimes lead to dizziness and loss of consciousness.

The future is digital

Although long awaited, the release of mobile medical devices such as the Apple Watch may help to alleviate some of the struggles associated with diabetes management and provide users with a sense of empowerment. It is thought that they will encourage users to actively engage in their day to day management, improving health outcomes and reducing the cost for healthcare providers.

Editor’s note: to find out how you can gain greater control over your blood sugar levels you can now register your interest for the Type 1 Program at www.type1program.com, developed from the feedback of over 40,000 members with type 1 diabetes.
