As Hurricane Ian makes landfall in Florida yesterday, Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla., barricaded its campus with an aqua fence to prevent flooding and storm surge damage from the Category 4 storm, according to the website tampabay.com.

The water-impermeable barrier is designed to handle a 15-foot surge above sea level.

Additionally, the hospital features 6-inch-thick metal barrier doors with inflatable bladders that create watertight seals below. Electrical, air conditioning, and other critical systems are located 25 feet above ground.

The 1,000-bed hospital is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, as well as the main destination for area first responders aiding patients who may need treatment in the storm.
