The existing Schenzhen Children’s Hospital has been a landmark in the Futian area of Shenzhen, China, since it was established in 1998, situated on a central site on the edge of the well-known Lianhuashan urban park.
In an effort to advance pediatric healthcare in the region, the new Shenzhen Children’s Hospital and Science and Education Building will combine treatment spaces and research facilities and be built to the west of the existing campus and connected via an elevated bridge. At the center of the design is a desire was for patients and visitors to experience the building through the eyes of children.
In joint venture with East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI; Shanghai) global design and consulting firm B+H Architects (Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore) will focus on creating a“micro-landscape” within and surrounding the hospital.
Guided by a connection to nature with a series of gardens and play areas, children are encouraged to engage with the outdoors in a playful medical environment. The focal point will be the cascade of roof gardens, visible from ground level. The cascading form is envisioned using a stepped building form, intended to evoke the nearby LianHua Mountain. Sheltered by a floral canopy at ground level, the facility’s “urban living room” is intended to connect the hospital with the surrounding community with a series of public spaces accessible by patients, visitors, and passersby.
Stepping inside, a timber-lined atrium containing circulation and a play area welcomes patients and visitors. Lower floors of the hospital will contain all of the outpatient clinics, while research and inpatient facilities will be on the upper floors.
