To keep up with the increased regional demand for orthopedic care, BayCare Clinic looked to architecture, interior design, and planning firm EUA (Milwaukee) to design a 47,000-square-foot clinic specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine to be located at its Lakeside Campus in Manitowoc, Wis.

The two-story clinic provides services to the area such as physical therapy, urology, neurosurgery, pain and rehabilitation, and eye care. The clinic design focuses on efficient function for staff and patients that visit the multiple departments within.

Opened in August 2021, the project design is inspired by maritime history as it sits alongside Lake Michigan, providing beautiful lakefront views. The exterior structure of BayCare’s Clinic Lakeside Campus is designed to emulate a ship hull. To stay consistent with the theme, the color palette includes elements found near Lake Michigan such as colors of sand, driftwood, stone, and water.

Designed to take advantage of the lake views, the spacious clinic features large windows that bring in copious amounts of natural light. Staff connection and well-being is supported via a centrally located nurses’ station, along with a breakroom and adjacent outdoor patio.

The first floor features a gym/rehabilitation center and a registration area with dividers providing privacy for patients. A monumental staircase connects the first-floor registration and waiting area to the second-floor physical therapy room, encouraging staff and patient mobility. The four clinic pods within the building feature multipurpose exam rooms and are intentionally placed on the south and east sides to maximize lake views.
